GSU stands with CUPE and the education workers in Ontario and strongly condemns the actions taken by the Ford government. Bill 28 is a direct attack on workers’ rights by attempting to prevent members from striking, imposing severe fines for the Union and its members for exercising their constitutionally protected right to strike, and unilaterally imposing a new collective agreement.
By invoking the Notwithstanding Clause, the Ford government is opening the door to dangerous precedents for all workers, from all provinces and jurisdiction. This is bigger than a conflict between an employer and a union. This could set the bar for any future collective bargaining, and everyone should be concerned about what is going on in Ontario.
I am calling upon all GSU activists and members to do what you can to show your support to CUPE and the education workers in Ontario, regardless of where you live in Canada. Here are some of the ways you show your support:
Again, I cannot stress enough how this situation could impact on the bargaining process and leaves the door open to take away even more workers rights.
