Navigating the 15% Budget Cuts: A Message from the GSU National President

Jul. 9, 2025

Dear members,

As many of you have heard, the federal government announced this week a 15% budget reduction as part of its broader spending review. We understand that this kind of news can be unsettling and may raise questions about the potential impact on your work and your future.

Let me be clear: at this time, there are no indications of job losses within our departments. Both Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) and Shared Services Canada (SSC) have explicitly committed to reducing or eliminating contracted services as a primary means to meet the budgetary targets. Additionally, we know that attrition, allowing for natural departures without replacement, will also play a role in how these reductions are managed.

GSU is actively engaged in ongoing dialogue, both formal and informal, with senior officials at PSPC and SSC. We are monitoring the situation closely and advocating at every level to ensure your interests and job security remain protected.

We recognize that these developments can be a source of stress and uncertainty, especially given recent media coverage and PSAC’s public alert. But it is important not to jump to conclusions or feed into speculation. The situation continues to evolve, and we will ensure that you receive accurate and timely updates as new information becomes available.

In the meantime, if you have any concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to your local representatives. Your union is here to support you.

In solidarity,

Bruce Roy
National President
